3-Mercaptopropionic Acid (MPA) is used in a variety of applications. The MPA itself is used as cocatalyst in the manufacture of Bisphenol A, which is a key raw material in Polycarbonate production. MPA enhances the process efficiency.
Another application is as Chain Transfer Agent (CTA) during Polymerisation of Polycarboxylates which are used in the building industry as superplasticiser in concrete.
Other applications are in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
The esters of MPA, like 2-Ethylhexyl 3-Mercaptopropionate, also called 2-EHMP, and Iso-Octyl 3-Mercaptopropionate, also called IOMP, react like regular mercaptans and show long term stability. Both are also key intermediates in the manufacture of tin heat-stabilizers for PVC.
MPA can be used to esterify Polyols resulting in Polythiols which are used as crosslinking additives in Coatings, Adhesives and Sealants and as monomers to manufacture Optical Resins. They react rapidly with isocyanates, unsaturated monomers (thiol-ene reaction) and epoxies.
MPA's unique reducing properties make it an ideal candidate for a wide variety of chemical reactions including addition, elimination, or cyclization reactions. MPA's thiol-group (-SH) will react in the presence of bases, acids, ketone groups or organic halogens. In the presence of alcohols or amines, the carboxylic group will react preferentially.
